Approach

Oomiak's approach, backed by skill and creative thinking, is to focus on fully understanding the key aspects of a project and, importantly, what the client wants to achieve.

Often, it means investing time with the client to rapidly build knowledge and understanding of their needs and specific factors about the environment in which the project is to be delivered. Such intelligence gathering forms the basis for shaping Oomiak’s approach, so that clients’ expectations are met and exceeded.

Industry: Food Location: Adelaide, South Australia
Client: Adelaide Ice
Project: Consolidating three ice works at one location

Planning was the key to the successful completion of this project, which involveddecommissioning at three sites and consolidating at Regency Park.

Phase one involved:
• assessing the condition of the equipment at the three sites
• relocating the equipment for reuse and disposing of obsolete equipment
• decommissioning.

Phase two involved:
• installing a new ice maker at the new plant
• positioning compressors, condensers and all pipework, and incorporating old
equipment with new

The brief
To provide the mechanical services, cooling, heating and air distribution systems for a new hatchery facility, maintaining product integrity in line with the client’s current standards.

The Challenge

In its design response, Oomiak’s challenge was to meet the client’s aims, which included to:

  • Protect the egg-hatching process against any variance from design storage conditions at all times, through to the production of day-old chicks
  • Ensure sufficient capacity to meet all aspects of the nominated design conditions, and configure available cooling, heating and air distribution capacity to minimise risk from individual component failure
  • Access to 24/7 service and parts supply to support installed plant
  • Ensure compatibility with other critical risk management services, and that system design and equipment are code compliant in all aspects
  • Choose materials and refrigerants that represent environmental responsibility.

Design response
For the past twelve months, Oomiak has been working on its solution for
mechanical services that meets the customer¹s needs for functionality,
quality, reliability, redundancy and cost effectiveness.

Mick Williams, Oomiak¹s Site Team Leader has had overall responsibility for
managing day to day activities on site and ensuring that Oomiak delivers the
project successfully. Matthew Willis another of Oomiak¹s Team Leaders has
played an important role managing specific elements of the project, such as
ducting.

Murray Smith, one of Oomiak¹s experienced refrigeration mechanics, is
overseeing the commissioning of the hatchery, which is set to see the first
eggs hatch in the new facility in late November.

Once fully operational, the hatchery will process more than a million eggs a
week, delivered from Baiada¹s breeding farms for incubation. Once hatched,
the chicks are reared for two purposes: table eggs or poultry meat.

Oomiak¹s Business Development Executive, Mark Holden, has worked closely
with the Baiada project team and on site team for the duration of the
project.
