Design team leader Mark Twigger at international conference in Germany

Oomiak is fully up to speed with the most advanced solutions to help customers tackle the challenges of climate change and associated legislation, especially the impending emissions trading scheme and phase out of HCFCs and HFCs.

Mark Twigger recently attended the Chillventa exhibition. This is one of the most important trade shows on the international circuit because it represents the largest number of manufacturers and suppliers to the refrigeration industry outside the United States.

The main focus of Mark’s trip was to increase Oomiak’s knowledge and expertise in new technologies and applications, particularly in relation to energy efficiency and tackling climate change. For customers this will means Oomiak is able to offer the most advanced and efficient solutions for their refrigeration needs and support in addressing the challenges of climate change legislation including the impending emissions trading scheme and phase out of HCFCs and HFCs.

Energy efficiency benefits customers . . . and the environment

A chicken hatchery in Tamworth New South Wales, chilled water piping for a mine in the Pilbara Western Australia and a refrigeration system for a business park in Somerton Victoria are recent projects that demonstrate Oomiak’s focus on energy efficiency.

On every project Oomiak backs sound engineering know-how with clever design and systems implementation to ensure the immediate and future needs of customers are met. Engineering solutions are focused on achieving energy efficiency to the benefit of both customers and the environment.

Natural refrigerants are always the preferred option.

Governor launches SA premises

The Governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR launched the new South Australian base for industrial refrigeration company Oomiak Pty Ltd on 22 April 2008.

The launch coincides with the company’s biggest project to date—a multi-million contract to deliver refrigeration and mechanical services to Baiada Poultry’s hatchery in Tamworth New South Wales.

Oomiak, which has facilities in Adelaide and Melbourne, started just two years ago, and today employs more than 20 industrial refrigeration specialists and technicians, a number of them young apprentices.

Oomiak’s chief executive, Cate McGuire, said it was hugely significant that the Governor accepted the invitation to officiate at the launch of the Dudley Park premises.

‘We knew the Governor was keen to support business in South Australia, and Oomiak is one of the state's newest and freshest. We’re already successful in Australia and beginning to build a presence in Asia.’

‘Our approach, like our name, has always been innovative. An Oomiak is a large open boat of the Inuit (formerly Eskimos) in which they moved from place to place, often from one climate to another. There is also another fit—the boat was used primarily by women and, to my knowledge, I am the only Chief Executive of an industrial refrigeration business in the country.

Cate says the company takes great pride in its training of apprentices, so important to building the nation’s skills base.

New crew members

Services to customers throughout South Australia have been boosted not only by the new facility, but also a number of new appointments, giving an already solid team additional industrial refrigeration credentials.

The company is proud to be investing in building its workforce and by taking on apprentices. It means we can develop skills and attitudes in line with business objectives and, at the same time, contribute to the wider community.

Cool Runnings

What does it take to make a business stand out from the crowd?

Cate McGuire of Oomiak has a simple answer. "Just be good, that's different enough."
McGuire is the co-founder and now chief executive of Oomiak, an Adelaide based industrial refrigeration business. Industrial refrigeration? How boring is that? Herding tradespeople, like cats, around big bits of machinery on the top of city buildings? Those guys work with their hands, not with their heads, how do you do it? people ask McGuire ...
